A Simple Request

Video Summary

Dr. Smith descirbes the many components that must be coordinate to carry out a simple request, including eye contact, communicative speech and gesture. Given that eeach of these skills may be challenging for a child with autism, many children with autism may chose to act for themselves, before they think or attempt to request help from others.

"Rather than attempt a request, some (autisitic children) will find it easier to attempt to get what they want themselves. Even when an adult tries to offer their assistance, it may be too difficult for the child to put into words or to express what he wants. And they become overwhelmed, tantrum or just leave the situation...."
